NDC Sacks Borno Assembly Candidate Over Alleged Pro-Atiku Campaign

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Borno State has dismissed its state House of Assembly candidate, Mohammed Bunu, over allegations that he campaigned for African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar.

In a letter dated October 25, 2026, and signed by the NDC state Deputy Chairman, Umar Fema, the party said Bunu’s alleged conduct violated its constitution, rules and disciplinary principles.

According to the letter, the controversy arose from campaign materials bearing the ADC logo, the slogan “Sabon Tafiya, Sabon Salo,” and the photographs and names of Atiku Abubakar and Bunu.

The party said the materials raised concerns about Bunu’s political allegiance and commitment to the NDC.

The disciplinary process reportedly began at the Hausari Ward level before the matter was referred to the party leadership in the Maiduguri Metropolitan Council for further investigation.

According to the party, Bunu was invited to appear before the ward executive on October 23 to respond to the allegations but failed to attend.

He was reportedly invited again on October 24 to appear before an investigation committee but did not attend the second hearing.

Following the proceedings, the ward leadership recommended disciplinary action, which was subsequently considered by the Maiduguri Metropolitan Council leadership and forwarded to the state chapter.

The NDC said its decision followed reports submitted through its internal disciplinary structures and directed Bunu to refrain from representing himself as authorised to act on behalf of the party in any capacity affected by the decision.

However, the letter distinguished between his dismissal from the party and the separate question of his status as a party candidate, noting that the issues were subject to the party’s constitutional procedures.

As of the report, Bunu’s response to the allegations was not included in the party’s statement.
