Tinubu Extends Tenures of Correctional, Immigration Service Chiefs by 18 Months
Nwakuche to remain in office until May 2028, Nandap until June 2028 as Presidency cites need to address succession gaps
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved an additional 18-month tenure for the heads of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) and the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), extending their stay in office until 2028.
The affected officials are Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, Controller-General of the Nigerian Correctional Service, and Kemi Nanna Nandap, Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service.
Under the approval, Nwakuche will remain in office until May 26, 2028, while Nandap’s tenure has been extended until June 30, 2028. The Presidency announced the decision on Monday, October 19, 2026, in a statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy.
According to the statement, the extension followed a recommendation by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, to address succession gaps in both agencies and give their respective boards sufficient time to appoint successors.
Tinubu commended the two service chiefs for the reforms recorded under their leadership and charged them to consolidate the gains made in their respective institutions.
Nwakuche was nominated by the President to head the Nigerian Correctional Service in December 2024, with the Senate confirming his appointment in March 2025.
Nandap, on the other hand, was nominated as Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service on February 21, 2024, and received Senate confirmation on March 1, 2024.
The extensions will allow both officials to continue overseeing their agencies while the process of selecting their successors is given additional time.
